New 5.5 Gen AMOLED plant for LG

An article in ZDNet Korea has proclaimed that the CEO of LG Display has announced that by 2014, OLED TVs will start actively competing with the present LCD TVs.

To cash in on this opportunity, LG Display plans to mass produce OLED TVs around that time. So, it is still not clear whether LG Display is planning its new 5.5 Gen plant for smaller displays or OLED TVs.

It was in April that LG Display announced the investment of $225 million in three new 4 Gen OLED production lines to go live in 2011. These production lines are to be used for smaller displays like cell phones.

Now the company has announced that a new 5.5 Gen AMOLED plant will come up in 2012 and it will be used for producing 50 inch OLED TV panels.

LG didn’t say how much it will invest but Samsung is going to invest $2.2 billion for a similar plant.
