Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan has used their FlexUPD Technology to develop a new 6 inch flexible color AMOLED.
The display has a thickness of only 0.01 cm. Even when it is folded one can see the images displayed on the screen. The scrolling of the screen can be done 15,000 times and the folding radius can reach up to 5 cm or even less.
As per ITRI, the FlexUPD Technology is the simplest of all and also the cheapest production mode for mass producing paper like displays. The technology will soon go commercial. AUO has already planned to use it for creating flexible e-reader products.
The breakthrough in FlexUPD is its adhesive and non-adhesive bonding simultaneously, creating a de-bonding layer. The inspiration comes from the crepe making technology used in Taiwan. It sticks to glass and does not stick to the polymide film stacked on top of it. So, flexible high quality color displays are produced through the active matrix backplane.
