Sang Soo Kim, Executive VP, Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) announced during SID-2010 that OLEDs will be the next generation displays.
Samsung has now announced that it plans to use 2200mm x 2500mm (8th generation line) sheets size for volume production of OLED TVs. These panels, using frame sequential scheme, are seen as the ultimate answer to 3D TVs. Although Samsung didn’t announce a date, it is expected that the volume production will start within the next 2 years or so.
There are some present technical issues that need to be resolved before volume production can be started. The 8th generation line is the basic sheet to be used for mass producing OLED devices.
For now, SMD has decided to use its new 5.5 generation line to produce low temperature poly-Si TFTs. They are also developing possible technologies that can help them produce 8th generation OLED TVs on a mass basis.
