Buying OLED TV

OLED had basically just stolen the whole show. But what should you know about OLED TVs before making a purchase?

Deep Black Colours. Getting the darkest black pixels has always been a target for LCD and Plasma screens. OLED TVs are in a league of their own when it comes to displaying rich black pixels.

Thin and Fragile Screens. Aside from the excellent picture quality, the biggest wow factor of OLED TVs is the thin screen profile. The Sony XEL-1 is just 3mm thick. This also means the screens are fragile and need to be handled with care.

Wide Viewing Angles. The filters used in LCD screens greatly reduce the possible viewing angle. OLED TVs don’t have these filters so picture quality remains high even at very wide angles.

Shorter Life Span. At the moment an OLED TV will have a shorter lifespan compared to the typical LCD or Plasma screen. Figures range from 17000 to 30000 hours.

Small Screens. As with all new display technologies, OLED has started life with pretty small screens by today’s standards.

As far as designer gadgets go, an brand new OLED TV in your living room is as good as it gets.
