Crepe making technology finds new use in AMOLED

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, or ITRI, has developed a flexible AMOLED that is only 6 inches in size.

This new AMOLED display has been created using ITRI’s FlexUPD technology. The display is amazingly thin at 0.01 cm and can show images even when it is folded. The screen can be rolled up to 15000 times and the folding radius can reach 5 cm or less.

As per ITRI, the FlexUPD technology is the cheapest and simplest technology for mass producing paper like displays. It will be soon commercialized and AUO is already planning to use it for their flexible e-readers.

The FlexUPD technology is inspired by the crepe making technique of Taiwan. The de-bonding layer used in this technology sticks to the production glass substrate but is completely non-adhesive for the polymide film stacked on top. Hence, the active matrix backplane can be used for high quality flexible color displays.
