Dupont has expressed its plans of using ceramics instead of glass for the protection of the layers in OLED panels. As predicted, the use of ceramics can spell success and it can be commercialized in the next few years.
The use of glass has often spelled trouble for OLEDs and CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) solar cells. The manufacturers face problems as moisture seep in through the glass and cause damage. Once the moisture gets into an OLED panel, it cannot be repaired easily.
To overcome this problem, Dupont has decided to use ceramics instead of glass. This Drylox cover glass is not only cost effective but also acts as an excellent alternative for encapsulation. Thin displays can be made using Drylox and manufacturing it is also easy. All the contaminants and moisture is absorbed by the Drylox, keeping the OLED safe.
The prototype is being produced under the Department of Energy grant and will be unveiled later this year.
