FOLED or Flexible OLED have substrates that are made of plastic of flexible metallic foils.
Flexible OLED are one of the most durable and lightweight of all OLEDs. When used in mobile phones and PDAs, damage or breakage can be reduced.
One of the biggest potentials of FOLED is that it can be sewn into fabrics for smart clothing. An outdoor survival clothing with integrated OLED sewn into it is possible with FOLED.
FOLED has the potential to reduce the huge cost associated with current OLED production. Sony and LG.Philips LCD have already announced that they have some FOLED products already designed.
Flexible displays can be seen at CES-2012. Samsung will be presenting a very advanced FOLED display during the event. This product has a 4.5 inch flexible AMOLED screen, is only 2 mm thick, runs at a WVGA 800 x 480 resolution and can be rolled down to a radius of 1 cm.
