Japanese Government Supports OLED Research in Japan


Japan has been a leader in new technology for many years now and the Japanese government has shown its support for Japan’s major OLED players.

It has been said by the Japanese government that it will support the Sharp Corporation & Sony Corp. along with other domestic companies investing heavily in the OLED TV market. The group of Japanese companies plan to develop a forty inch of OLED display which, after 2015, will be created. NEDO, is a Japanese government agency which promotes such researches into new technologies.

OLED has a light emitting organic compound which is quite similar to the fire flies. An OLED Television does not need a back light and is made thinner than that based on the traditional liquid crystal. The technology is still in its conception stage and the Japanese manufacturers are eager to the South Korean television heavy weights like the LG Display co. and Samsung electronics co.

The year 2007 saw the introduction of OLED Television in the commercial market. It is an 11 inch of television with 3 millimeters of screen thickness (Sony XEL-1). This television is on sale which roughly ten times of its price with comparable LCD models.

Sharp Corporation takes a long term view on OLED Television and has no such fixed plans for commercial production. Such company promises to invest in LCD manufacturing and remains the dominant technology for the next ten years as per Miyuki Nakayama. This joint research is from 2008 to March 2013. It strives to focus on increasing its longevity and also on the power efficiency of the OLED television along with efficient manufacturing.

There are also other companies like Hitachi Zosen corp. which are interested in carrying forward this project. OLEDs are also used in small devices like car navigation systems and mobile phones.
