Sony is about to sell its TFT Liquid Crystal Display Design and Manufacturing Facility Yasu plant, where small LCD panels for mobile phones were manufactured, to Kyocera.
According to a recent announcement by Kyocera Corporation, the acquisition of the plant located in Yasu City of Shiga Prefecture in Japan, will take place on June 1, 2010. An agreement has been sealed with Sony Corporation to take over the LCD plant from its subsidiary Sony Mobile Display Corporation. The employment contracts will also be transferred to Kyocera.
The selling of the LCD plant by Sony might be an indication that OLED technology will not be further developed by the company. Earlier this year, Sony had terminated the sales of its 11 inch XEL-1 OLED TV in Japan.
Now that Sony is partially removing itself away from low temperature polysilicon displays, which is connected to the OLED TV panels technology, might mark an end to the company’s OLED development.
