OLED Hits The Small Screen

OLED is about to liven up your small screens with bright, vibrant and colourful images.

OLED Hits The Small Screen

If you are tired of low-resolution and fuzzy screens on digital cameras, mobile phones, or handheld media players, just relax! There is a new alternative for you.

The 1st generation of handled devices which make use of OLED display technology are already on the store shelves. There are also many more on the way.

The basic advantage of using this new-fangled OLED screen is clear, bright, vivid and colourful images. Even the smallest OLED screens refresh faster. Hence, they’re generally better with respect to displaying video. The finest OLED displays have the capacity to display almost 4 times as many colours compared to LCDs of equivalent size.

The difference in image quality of small OLED screens is clear. When people see an actual screen the difference in terms of bright colour, contrast, and phenomenal angle of viewing, usually blows them away.

Unlike LCDs, Organic Light Emitting Diodes go on to emit light of their own in the form of a phenomenon called ‘electroluminescence’. Consequently, OLED televisions and screens appear brighter as well as sharper in comparison with LCDs, in spite of viewing at wide angles.

Another benefit of using small OLED screens in handheld devices is the lower power consumption compared to LCDs. Having ditched LCD backlight, OLED screens are simply more economical, doing wonders for battery life..

It is a known fact that consumption of power is one of the most critical elements when it comes to mobile phones. These days, phones are all multimedia devices. When OLED is used, you can concentrate on size of battery, or keep it and obtain more performance.

Samsung already makes use of monochrome Organic Light Emitting Diodes displays for smaller outer screen with respect to its P735 and E715 mobile phones. It is expected to start with the sale of novel phones containing full-color OLED screens soon. Nokia have just launched their 6600 Fold with outer OLED screen.

However, the cost of producing a small OLED screen is still much higher than producing an LCD screen. We won’t see widespread adoption of small OLED screens for a while yet.

Industry forecasts predict that by the year 2010, factories will be churning out around 289 million OLED screens every year. It is estimated that around 88% of all these will be used in mobile phones.
