OLEDs declared more energy efficient

DisplayDaily has recently released its reports on the energy saving capacity of OLED TVs.

The Green Displays Report; The Business Threats and Opportunities of Green Displays have revealed some interesting facts. The larger AMOLED TVs of 42 inch save more energy than a conventional LCD TV.

The most important reason behind this is the capability of OLED displays of having its own backlight. Light is emitted through each pixel location and this prevents the use of backlights.

LCDs use a backlight for the images to be seen. The passage of light is controlled at each pixel site. The same amount of power is consumed irrespective of a bright or dark image. This makes the power consumption of OLEDs as much as 70 percent lesser than LCDs.

However, the next generation LCDs use a unique concept called Local Area Dimming or LAD for consuming less energy for images with less amount of color. An OLED TV still consumes 30% less energy than the best LCD TV.
