Price of OLED panels to be lower than LCD in 2016, LG predicts

LG’s future plans have finally been unveiled by the Vice President of LG Display’s OLED sales and marketing, Won Kim.

At this year’s FPD show, organized in Japan, it was established that LG stands second in OLED panel production. The company will start shipping the OLED panels from November 2009.

LG has the 20 inch OLED panel lined up for a 2010 release. A 30 inch OLED panel will follow in 2011 and the 40 inch OLED panel will come in 2012.

Although the 40 inch model will be “fairly expensive” in 2012, the cost is expected to fall by 2016. According to Kim’s prediction, 2106 will witness OLED panels with a lower price tag as compared to LCD panels.

This comes as great news for consumers waiting for a more affordable OLED panel. Won Kim revealed that this will be possible with their plan of using “low temperature polycrystal silicon” that will have sixth generation size glass substrate.
