Samsung Showcases Transparent OLED Prototype at CES 2009

Samsung transparent OLEDAt the CES this year, Samsung has stunned everyone with their transparent OLED prototype.

This new technology has been named TOLED. When this OLED display is switched off, it has a transparency of 70% to 85%. This makes it look clear like the plastic or glass with which it was built. The other side of the OLED panel is clearly visible through it.

The Managing director of OLED Association, Barry Young, remarked that they are presenting next generation consumer electronics. According to him, displays act as a window and a lot of power is consumed in lighting.

But they are essential in our lives. OLEDs are known in the market for the best picture quality. OLEDs are also the greenest light source in the display industry. These are also the thinnest and the brightest displays with remarkable flexibility.

Samsung reveals that the TOLED will go into mass production in the following couple of years.

When you say the other side of the OLED screen is completely transparent, what does that mean exactly? Doesn’t the display emit in both directions so that you can see an image on either side?
