The president of LG Display has said that his company will start making small OLED displays starting next year.
It will use its 4.5 and 5.5 Generation production lines for this purpose. The 4.5 Generation line was announced in April 2010 and is expected to start production soon. There has been an investment of $225 million in this project. There are customers queuing up already for these panels.
Although LG has not made any commitment of dates for the 5.5 Generation line, rumor has it that this new line will be fully utilized for the production of OLED TVs. But we have heard reports that LG will only produce small OLED panels through this new line.
As far as OLED TVs are concerned, LG has plans for 2013. To make them price competitive, an 8 Generation line will be ideal for these TVs, as per LG. We wait to see whether LG will launch the 31 inch OLED TV for $9,000 in 2011.
