Last year Sony discontinued their deal with Samsung to deliver LCD panels.
As per the CFO of LG Display, Sony now buys more film based 3D displays from LG. Sony switched from Samsung’s battery powered 3D displays to the more economical FPR based 3D displays form LG. As a result, LG will now need to double their production.
This deal with Sony will now make it possible for LG to achieve its goal to become the largest 3D TV maker by end 2012. It is estimated that the demand for 3D HDTV will go above 40 million by end 2012. LG also wants to become the major supplier of large OLED panels for TVs.
LG is looking to invest 400 billion won in 2012 to ramp up mass production for OLED panels. The line will cost 2.5 times more and will be ready in 18 months and LG can start off with 48,000 55 inch OLED devices monthly.
