Sony made a surprising announcement last week that it will terminate the sale of OLED TVs in Japan.
The demand for the uber thin and expensive OLED TVs in Japan have not been very encouraging. This made the company pull off these flat TVs from the market.
The production of the OLED TVs in Japan has already been stopped. The sale will continue till the stocks last. However, Sony will continue making OLED TVs for the European and the North American markets.
When Sony announced the launch of the first OLED TV in the world in 2007, it was well received. Sony promoted the XEL-1 11 inch OLED TV as the technology that would make the company the ruler of the market again.
The Sony XEL-1 had been priced at 200,000 Yen in Japan. It failed to create the hype that Sony had predicted. The small screen size and the high price tag discouraged consumers from taking this OLED TV home.
