The first OLED TV produced commercially by Sony was launched in 2008. With an 11 inch screen and a price tag of $2500, it had impressed everyone with its fabulous picture quality.
Now Sony could face tough competition from other leading companies who are joining the OLED bandwagon. One of the first companies to have announced the commercial production of OLED TV this year is LG. Sony’s plans of launching a 27 inch OLED TV for the holiday shopping season of 2009 has not been confirmed yet.
In one of the interviews published by OLEd-Info.com, Won Kim of LG Display commented on the company’s plans of marketing OLED TVs by January. These will be launched at first in South Korea and then have a global release.
Although the price was not divulged, the LG OLED TV is said to be of 15 inches. It will have a paper-thin screen and 30,000 hour shelf life. A prototype of this OLED panel was displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2009.
