What Does OLED mean?

This is the first of hopefully a series of articles explaining the technology behind OLED and OLED Televisions. To start things off we will (try to) explain exactly what OLED means.

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and is the predecessor of the LED. Like the LED it is a lighting device. However, with an OLED, because the organic compounds are deposited in rows and columns it allows for a matrix of colours and lights to be emitted.

This is good news for TV’s and other digital displays such as PDA’s, computer displays and mobile phones. The OLED is a brand new technology which is fast becoming very popular. Large companies such as Samsung and Sony have released OLED television prototypes.

To start out, Sony produced some small screens at around 11 inches which were an impressive 5mm in thickness and Samsung also created a few small screens for testing. Recently, Samsung produced a television prototype which, using OLED is 40 inches wide and 3cm thick. It is said that OLED will bring the future of televisions to be bigger but much thinner.

OLED is a brand new technology and as the large companies such as Samsung and Sony develop these masterful works, you can expect huge screens and extremely thin TV sets. The quality of OLED is absolutely fantastic and is as sharp if not sharper than HD LCD screens which are now available.

The OLED TV which Samsung has developed is capable of wide screen pixel formats of 1280×800 and because the OLED is now being tested and designed quickly it has come to light that the OLED screen can use a max. screen brightness of 600 nits, a colour gamut of 80 percent and a black and white contrast ratio of 5,000:1. High quality movies and greater response time for video displays are also set to increase with the development and testing of these prototypes.

As this technology is quickly becoming more popular, other large companies will step in and create prototypes for display and eventually these TVs will become widely available as the new “must have” generation of televisions.
